Sholei Croom

PhD Candidate in Psychological and Brain Sciences

  • Hi! My name is Sholei Croom (they/them) – I’m a doctoral candidate at Johns Hopkins University where I am advised by Chaz Firestone. My current research sits at the intersection of visual perception, action understanding, physical reasoning, and social cognition. You can learn more about specific projects with these themes by clicking on the ‘current projects’ tab below!

Before coming to JHU, I was a Lab Manager in Josh Tenenbaum‘s CoCoSci lab at MIT. There, I worked on projects related to intuitive physics and computational models of social behavior. Before that, I received my Sc.B from Brown University where I worked with Fulvio Domini on a series of experiments exploring how 3D object properties are encoded by the visual system to guide motor actions.

Beyond my main research interests, I also advocate for approaches to cognitive science that critically engage with social context. Alongside other vision scientists of color (and our allies), I co-organized the Critical Perspectives on Vision Science symposium at VSS 2023. You can learn more about the symposium and about Critical Vision Science here! I’m currently writing a manuscript that outlines the ethos of a critical approach to vision science, which will appear in the Journal of Vision.
